R.E.M. Fiction: An Alternative Biography
Book Number: 31518
Virgin Publishing 2002 8vo hardcover 472pp index, b/w illus. near fine / very good+ d/w. A unique biography of one of the most influential rock bands of the last three decades. R.E.M. formed in the early 80s and sold almost no records for the first ten years of their existence, yet the media portrayal of them has been unquestioning. They shot to fame in the 1990s with their singles Out of Time and Automatic for the People selling over 25 million copies between them. They were heralded as the saviors of US rock. David Buckley reanalyzes this accepted view of them, taking a close look at their music and public persona and providing a compelling must-read for all rock fans. Definitive, informed reanalysis of the R.E.M. myth, drawing on interviews with many of the band's closest associates and friends By the author of the critically acclaimed David Bowie: Strange Fascination Includes previously unseen early photographs.

Black Noise: Rap Music and Black Culture in Contemporary America
Book Number: 51011
Wesleyan May 15, 1994 8vo softcover 257pp very good. Rap music often blasts African American rage into mainstream American culture and with its call-and-response choruses and violent, no-holds-barred lyrics, questions societal tradition and authority. These assertions aren't hard to prove. The problem lies in explaining all this without forgetting that most of this music's impact depends on having a good beat and being danceable. Rose, an assistant professor of history and Africana studies at New York University, is generally successful in putting rap in the context of the urban noise, technology and socioeconomics that nurtures it and of the "slave dances, blues lyrics, Mardi Gras parades, Jamaican patois, toasts and signifying" that preceded it. Rose addresses sexism, both in the plight of women rappers and in rap lyrics, partially excusing the latter by saying, "Rap's sexist lyrics are also part of a rampant and viciously normalized sexism that dominates the corporate culture of the music business." Supporting her thesis are direct interviews with rappers, personal remembrances and anecdotes, as well as deconstruction of lyrics and videos. Although her analyses are often fascinating, in sentences like "Rappers are constantly taking dominant discursive fragments and throwing them into relief destabilizing hegemonic discourses and attempting to legitimate counter/hegemonic interpretations," Rose becomes unnecessarily obscurantist, forgetting to let the music speak for itself. The Beatles Way: Fab Wisdom for Everyday Life
Book Number: 35781
Hillsboro, Or. Beyond Words Publishing 2001 8vo softcover 172pp index. very good. Thirty-one years after the Fab Four disbanded, Beatlemania continues in full swing. The group's latest CD, 1, is one of the fastest-selling records in history; their biography, Anthology, is a bestseller; and a new generation is falling under their spell. By analyzing the Beatles' extraordinary journey, Larry Lange has discerned specific principles that illustrate how to live more profound, richer, and happier lives. These principles include harnessing the power of dreaming, learning to set and meet goals, dealing with fear of the unknown, working as a team while remaining self-sufficient, keeping dreams fresh, and remaining open to spirituality and social responsibility. The book offers these principles of success and the exuberance of the Beatles as an alternative to traditional personal growth books.

Goddess - Madonna
Book Number: 30874
New York, Cliff Street Books, HarperCollins, 2001 8vo hardcover 448pp index, b/w illus. very good / very good d/w. From the moment Madonna first appeared on the international music scene, she has been hounded, criticised, honoured, revered, and ignored - and despite these conflicting reactions has managed to set social, sexual, and musical trends of the last two decades. She is a chameleon figure who has changed her look and her sound dramatically over the years, and despite her exhibitionist tendencies and the intense scrutiny of the press, has remained an enigma to the public, keeping her most intimate identity hidden from all but her closest acquaintances. Goddess begins with material from a 1993 interview Victor had with Madonna, and ends with one scheduled for 6/22/01. The author has interviewed Madonna's maternal grandmother, father, stepmother, siblings, first boyfriends, high school friend with whom she had a lesbian relationship, dance teacher/mentor, and many more people from her formative years. Victor examines her emotional life, her career, the fact or fantasy of her lesbian and heterosexual relationships, her taste, her genius for reinvention, her brilliant business sense. Goddess explores the highs and lows of Madonna's exploits in front of the camera and behind the scenes, based on interviews with people who knew her in New York before she was famous and new sources including former lovers, household employees, and business associates. In asking questions narcissist or intellectual, autodidactic or just a quick study, Victor explores the source of Madonna's perfectionism, drive, instinct and talent.

Waiting For Kate Bush
Book Number: 57877
Omnibus Press November 15, 2004 8vo hardcover 240pp Near Fine. / Near Fine d/w.. When Kate Bush came out of nowhere in 1978 with her jaw-droppingly eccentric debut single 'Wuthering Heights', screeching like a banshee, flapping her arms as though trying to take wing, pulling alarming faces, people either adored or loathed her. One of the former was an American underwear model, Lesley Herskovits, who, in spite of his remarkable good looks, reserved his loathing for himself. By the time Kate had taken to keeping her fans waiting literally ages between albums, he'd found himself a boarding house near Kate's birthplace that accommodated only fervent Kate fans. Only his disinclination to miss her eighth album, after waiting more than a decade for it, kept him from leaping off a multi-storey tower block. In Waiting for Kate Bush - an unusual hybrid of satirical novel and music biography - the reader will not only laugh aloud at Herskovits' attempt to make sense of his life in an alien culture, but also learn in detail what Kate Bush - known alternately as
