Practical Ethics - Second Edition
Singer, Peter
Book Number: 63292
ISBN: 9780521439718
Cambridge ; New York Cambridge University Press 2007 8vo softcover 395pp index. very good+. Peter Singer's remarkably clear and comprehensive Practical Ethics has become a classic introduction to applied ethics since its publication in 1979 and has been translated into many languages. For this second edition the author has revised all the existing chapters, added two new ones, and updated the bibliography. He has also added an appendix describing some of the deep misunderstanding of, and consequent violent reaction to, the book in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland where the book has tested the limits of freedom of speech. The focus of the book is the application of ethics to difficult and controversial social questions: equality and discrimination by race, sex, ability, or species; abortion, euthanasia, and embryo experimentation; the moral status of animals; political violence and civil disobedience; overseas aid and the obligation to assist others; responsibility for the environment; the treatment of refugees. Singer explains and assesses relevant arguments in a perspicuous, non-doctrinaire way. He structures the book to show how contemporary controversies often have deep philosophical roots; and he presents an ethical theory of his own that can be applied consistently and convincingly to all the practical cases. The book's primary readership remains teachers and students of ethics whether in philosophy or some other branch of the humanities or social sciences. However, such is the clarity of the book's style and structure that it should interest any thinking person concerned with the most difficult social problems facing us as we approach the twenty-first century.

The muse in the machine : computers and creative thought

Book Number: 29804
ISBN: 1857020839
London Fourth Estate 1994 8vo hardcover 211pp index. very good+ / very good+ d/w. Designed for a wide audience, this book claims that the standard approach to human thought is wrong in fundamental ways. The author challenges, in particular, the views of Daniel Dennett ("Consciousness Explained") and Roger Penrose ("The Emperor's New Mind"): first, emotion is a necessary part of thought and so a thinking computer will not be possible until a feeling computer is possible; second, reasoning, logic and analysis are only part of the way we think - there are also other kinds of thinking, such as poetic and religious; third, the nature of thought is intertwined with the nature of art. He also discusses philosophy, psychology, technology, art and literature, in particular the poetry of Wordsworth, Blake, Keats and the Bible.

History and Subjectivity: The Transformation of Marxist Theory
Gottlieb, Roger S.
Book Number: 41175
ISBN: 0877224943
Temple Univ Press 1987 8vo hardcover 318pp index, b/w illus. very good+ / very good d/w. Can Marxism still serve the American left? History and Subjectivity answers this question by synthesizing the conflicting perspectives of traditional Marxism, Western and neo-Marxism, socialist-feminism, and various minority political movements into a comprehensive and original social theory. nnIn the last seventy years, social change and the failure of leftist movements have made it necessary to transform Marxist theory. Undermined by its own theoretical success, traditional Marxism mistakenly assumed that Marx's understanding of competitive capitalism could be the model for theories of any society. Roger Gottlieb argues convincingly that the transformation of Marxist theory requires a fundamentally new understanding of social primacy. nnGottlieb draws on resources from virtually all areas of contemporary radical social theory. This interdisciplinary approach results in a sweeping synthesis of existing Marxist thought and an original and compelling social theory. nnFrom the PublishernAn original social theory synthesizing conflicting perspectives of Marxism
